After The Rains – Square Canvas Print

After the Rains is part of A Walk in the Wildflowers, a collection of paintings inspired by artist Helen
Ansell’s lifelong connection to the landscapes of Western Australia’s arid rangelands. Created as a tribute
to her late father, Don Miller, the exhibition celebrates the native flora, fauna and memories that shaped
both her childhood at Ululla and the many years they later spent exploring the wildflowers together
around Mullewa.

In Australia’s arid interior, rainfall transforms the landscape with extraordinary speed. Native frogs
emerge from beneath the ground to breed in temporary pools, goannas become active as food becomes
abundant, and native plants respond rapidly to the moisture. Bush tomatoes (Solanum species), grasses
and seasonal wildflowers flourish during these brief windows of abundance, creating one of the
Australian outback’s most remarkable natural events before the landscape gradually returns to its dry
rhythm.

Some of my strongest childhood memories are of the dramatic transformation that took place at Ululla
after rain. What had seemed like a dry, quiet landscape would suddenly burst into life. Hundreds of tiny
frogs emerged from beneath the sand, goannas appeared to feast on them, fresh tracks covered the wet
earth, and the country came alive with bush tomatoes, grasses and wildflowers. Those brief moments
revealed just how vibrant and full of life the desert could be.

This painting celebrates the resilience of Western Australia’s arid landscapes and the unforgettable
moments I shared with Dad while exploring the country together. After the Rains is a reminder that some
of nature’s greatest spectacles are also its most fleeting, and that beauty often appears where we least
expect it.
