Helen Ansell is an Australian artist based in Mullewa, in the heart of Western Australia’s wildflower country. Her bold, highly recognisable paintings are shaped by a lifetime spent among the native plants, birds, animals and landscapes of regional and remote Western Australia.
What began on canvas has grown into a much broader creative practice. Helen’s work now extends across large-scale public art, exhibitions, textiles, fashion and design, while her Studio Gallery and Café in Mullewa has become a destination for visitors travelling through wildflower country.
At the centre of it all is the landscape itself and the colour, forms and extraordinary biodiversity of the country Helen knows firsthand.
Helen’s understanding of Western Australia’s native flora began long before it became the subject of her paintings. Growing up around regional and remote Western Australia, she spent time with her father, Don Miller, collecting seeds and learning about the plants and landscapes around them.
Don’s knowledge of Western Australian botany gave Helen an unusually close relationship with the natural world from an early age. Plants were not simply scenery; they had names, seasons, forms and stories.
That way of seeing the landscape still runs through Helen’s work today, from individual wildflowers and seed pods to paintings filled with the extraordinary botanical diversity of inland Western Australia.

Residing in Mullewa, the heart of Western Australia’s wildflower country, Helen Ansell continually draws inspiration from the abundant native WA flora and fauna. Helen’s contributions to Australian art extend beyond her canvas. She is actively involved in large scale public art projects, gallery exhibitions, and supplies numerous Western Australian retailers with her unique designs and prints.
Well known for her wildflower-themed regional murals, you can find Helen’s work adorning unexpected walls and buildings throughout Western Australia. Tourists flock to Western Australias midwest region during the wildflower season (Aug – Oct) to snap photos of fields in bloom and follow the Helen Ansell Wildflower Art Trail.
Embracing the dynamism of Australian art, Helen Ansell frequently launches new exhibitions and collections. “Floral Fashionista” held in 2022 featured a limited-edition fashion line inspired by her paintings and was part of a collaboration with Flax and Fleece, a Western Australian slow fashion design company, merging the best of Australian fine art and textile design.
