Desert Seeds – Original Painting by Helen Ansell

Desert Seeds is inspired by the many years Helen spent collecting native seeds with her father, Don, at Ululla Station.

Seed collecting became an important part of life at Ululla after Don turned his attention from the sheep industry to native flora. What began as a practical business developed into a lifelong fascination, with Don learning the flowering seasons, habitats and botanical names of countless Western Australian plants. That knowledge — and the time Helen spent alongside him collecting seeds across the station — became an enduring influence on her own work.

Desert Seeds draws on those memories and the remarkable diversity of Western Australia’s native flora. It is also a painting about something Helen and her father quite literally gathered together: the seeds of the landscape they both loved.

Created for Helen’s 2026 exhibition, A Walk in the Wildflowers – A Homage to My Father and the Country We Love, the work forms part of a collection exploring the memories, objects and landscapes that connect Helen to her father and to Ululla.
