Desert Seeds Fine Art Paper Print

Desert Seeds is part of A Walk in the Wildflowers, a deeply personal exhibition by Helen Ansell inspired by the landscapes she explored with her father, Don Miller. Through paintings and personal stories, the collection reflects their years spent walking the country at Ululla and later amongst the wildflowers around Mullewa, revealing the remarkable diversity of Australia’s arid landscapes.

The painting draws attention to the often-overlooked beauty of native seeds and the important role they play in the regeneration of arid ecosystems. Many Australian desert plants produce seeds that can remain dormant in the soil until rainfall creates the right conditions for germination. Native grasses, wattles (Acacia species) and countless wildflowers rely on this natural cycle, responding quickly to seasonal rain before setting seed for the next generation.

When the sheep industry at Ululla came to an end, Dad began collecting native seed instead. I spent countless hours travelling across the station with him, learning about the incredible variety of plants that grew there and helping collect seed for revegetation projects.

Looking closely at each seed changed the way I saw the bush. Every shape, texture and colour belonged to a different plant, each perfectly adapted to survive in the harsh conditions of the outback. Desert Seeds reflects those years spent alongside Dad and the appreciation we developed for the remarkable diversity of plants within the Australian landscape.
