Birds of the Mid West

Birds of the Mid West celebrates the vivid beauty of Western Australia’s native birdlife and wildflowers, painted in Helen Ansell’s signature style of rich colour and flowing botanical design. The composition brings together five iconic species — the Red-tailed Black Cockatoo, Willy Wagtail, Magpie Lark, Sacred Kingfisher, and White-plumed Honeyeater— all set amongst the delicate blooms of Coral Gum, Banksias, and Wattles native to the Mid West region.

Each bird tells its own story of the Australian bush:

• The Red-tailed Black Cockatoo, with its striking crimson tail feathers, is a symbol of resilience and strength.

• The lively Willy Wagtail darts playfully through the branches, known for its fearless curiosity.

• The Magpie Lark, or Peewee, is instantly recognisable by its crisp black-and-white plumage and proud, upright stance.

• The Sacred Kingfisher shimmers in turquoise and green, representing clarity and connection between land, sky, and water.

• The White-plumed Honeyeater, gentle and sociable, flits through the eucalyptus canopy in search of nectar.

Framed by Coral Gum blossoms (Eucalyptus torquata) — famous for their coral-pink flowers and grey-green foliage — and enhanced by the golden tones of Wattle and sculptural forms of Banksia, the piece captures the energy and harmony of the Mid West’s natural environment.
