Description
“A favourite among bird lovers, it is always a joy to spot a flash of blue darting among the bush! This painting was based upon a photo taken by bird enthusiast Mark Eatwell.” Helen Ansell
The ‘Splendid Wren’ is found across much of Australia. Like other Fairy-wrens it is unrelated to the true wren. In Western Australia it is known colloquially as the ‘Blue Wren’, and is found in much of central and southern parts in a habitat ranging from forest through to dry scrub. It generally seeks vegetation for shelter. Ants, grasshoppers, crickets, spiders, bugs and small quantities of seeds flowers and fruit form its diet. Being an active and restless feeder it moves with a series of hops and bounces, usually across open ground, assisted by its large upright tail. Two to eight birds defend a territory year round. Breeding occurs in late August through to January when the males provide various courtship displays while the female, with brown plumage blue wings and tail, builds the nest. In some urbanised areas it has disappeared, as it hasn’t adapted well to human occupation, but otherwise its numbers are not threatened. Marri (Corymbia calophylla) is a large and common tree in the southwest of Australia allied to Bloodwoods rather than Eucalypti.
