The blue wren or Splendid Fairy-wren (Malurus splendens) is a tiny, social insect-eating bird known for the male’s brilliant cobalt plumage during breeding season and its lively presence in the understorey of shrublands across south-western Australia. Perched amid the Thelymitra campanulata, or Shirt Orchid, a sun orchid species found in sandy heaths and Banksia woodlands, the wren becomes part of a delicate ecosystem of blues and violets.
