“I travelled up to Arnhem Land to run some textile Design workshops and was lucky to be able to visit Kakadu Park while I was there. I wanted to paint a crocodile – such an Australian icon – but with a difference, the painting was to be pretty! I was blown away by the huge waterlilies filling the water (reminding me of my trip to visit Monet’s Waterlilies in Paris!)  and decided to incorporate the two into my work.” Helen Ansell

The habitats of the saltwater crocodile are saltwater and brackish wetlands from India’s east coast across South East Asia and the Sudaic region to northern Australia and Micronesia.

In Australia it ranges across the top-end coastal fringe from Broome to mid-Queensland, with an estimated adult population of 100,000 to 200,000. It has a tendency to travel long distances at sea, while on the coast it generally spends the tropical wet season in freshwater swamps and rivers, moving downstream to the estuaries during the dry season.

Males can grow to over 6m (20ft) in length and more than 1,000kg (2,000lb) in weight.

It feeds opportunistically by ambushing almost any other animal, including sharks, and then drowns or swallows it whole.
