Description
“While I have painted many Banksias before, what attracted me to paint this variety was the gorgeous pinky colour that some varieties of this plant come in. I love how Bankias come in all different shapes and colours and as the common name suggests – the leaves on this plant are somewhat shorter and appear to almost have been cut. I have also painted Wattlebirds before but I just love how their simple shapes and natural patterns make them so easy to translate into my characteristic style.” Helen Ansell
This is a shrub to about 4 metres tall. The leaves are broad, about 50 mm long by 15 mm wide with toothed margins and with the ends truncated, giving rise to both the scientific and common names. The cylindrical flower spikes are conspicuous and up to 350 mm long by 100 mm diameter at maturity. The flower colour is wine red but other variations in colour (eg. yellow) are seen occasionally. They flower in winter and spring. The seeds are enclosed in follicles attached to a woody cone and are generally retained within the cone until burnt.
It is found in the shrub-land and woodland of southern Western Australia and within 2km of the coast.
The plant is fire-sensitive in that it does not have lignotuber for vegetative regeneration after bushfires. Instead it regenerates from seed.
