These cute little guys are often spotted around my hometown during mating season or after a good rain. I once stopped to pick one up on the highway as I was afraid he would get run over by a truck, he curled into a tight ball and he was so spikey I had to use my shoes on my hands to pick him up!
The Echidna, along with its relative the platypus, is an egg-laying mammal. It exists in both Australia and New Guinea. The diet of some species consist of ants and termites. It has an elongated and slender snout that function as both mouth and nose, along very short strong limbs with large claws which make it a powerful digger. Accessing food is done by tearing open soft logs, anthills and the like, and using its long, sticky tongue, which protrudes from the snout, to collect prey. It has no teeth, instead breaking food down by grinding it between the bottom of the mouth and its tongue. They sometime use the burrows of other animals. Individual echidnas have large, mutually overlapping territories. In the wild they can live around 14-16 years. Eremophilia glabra is endemic to Australia. Kalbarri Carpet is a ground hugging sub-species.
