Description
“In 2013 I was lucky enough to travel with my young family up to the Bungle Bungles in the Kimberley. With layer upon layers of different colours of sediment in the unusual shaped rocks, it was an artist’s dream and I spent the whole time wondering how I might be able to paint them! This was one of the outcomes of that trip.” Helen Ansell
Wind from the Tanami Desert and rainfall over millions of years have shaped these distinctively domed towers from sandstones and conglomerates (pebbles and boulders cemented together). Dark algae grown in bands on rock that hold more moisture. In between surface weathering has oxidised iron and manganese in the sandstone to brilliant outback ochre.
Interspersed in the Gorge are palm trees (Livistonia victoriae), which are thought to be living fossils left over from the ancient Gondwanan rainforest that covered the region many years ago. They are now a part of the genus of palms native to southern, south-eastern, and eastern Asia, Australasia, and the Horn of Africa.
Together they form an iconic landscape.
