Description
This is a shrub or small tree up to 5m (16ft) high, having prickly foliage and pink and cream flowers. When the bloom is nearly fully opened the individual buds resemble matchsticks. It only occurs over a 90 km (56 mi) range around Pingelly and Quairading in Western Australia. Flowers appear from September to December. It is pollinated by honeyeaters. This spectacular Banksia species is classified as endangered, with only about 500 plants left in the wild at 11 different sites. Much of its habitat has been cleared for agriculture. Fire releases the seed but also kills the plant. It is highly sensitive to bushfire frequency – fires recurring within four years could wipe out populations of plants not yet mature enough to set seed. An alternative common name is Quairading Banksia.
