Native Hibiscus – Square Paper Print
$49.95 – $175.00
The inspiration for this painting came from my daily drive between Yalgoo and Mullewa in 2020 when I was driving the 200km round trip to deliver art lessons within the community. I saw a gorgeous flash of purple on the side of the road and had to stop and take a photo of this exotic looking flower growing happily in the red desert dirt. While the tropical (non native)hibiscus is better known I loved discovering that, like many flowers around the world, we have our own native version.
This is a rapid growing medium-sized shrub reaching about 2.5 m tall and almost equal breadth. It is found in sandy to sandy-gravel areas of coastal South Australia and near inland of south-west Western Australia.
The flowers open in the morning and last one day. Even so, the shrub is capable of producing hundreds of blooms per season. From late spring to the end of summer the species is covered in lilac flowers some 7 cm across with reddish-purple throats. Other colour forms found are violet, blue, rose pink and white.
