This icon image of an Emu and their brood set against a familiar Western Australian backdrop of Xanthorrhoea plants was Helen Ansell’s entry in the 2023 Mid West Art Awards.

“Growing up in the remote indigenous community of Ululla, WA, I’ve always felt a deep bond with Country. This connection enriches my modern, interpretive art style. In “Old Man Emu”, I play with patterns from Western Australia’s wild nature, using simple shapes to capture the intricate emu feathers and the tenacity of grass trees.” Helen Ansell

Tourists and locals alike are captivated by emus and their chicks. Male emus are devoted father’s – both incubating the eggs over two months and also caring for the chicks after hatching. This painting is a celebration of this beautiful Australian native bird!
