Description
These grow to be 19-24cm (max 28cm) in length, including the elongated tail feathers. They are a common species and can be found during the summer in forested areas in most of southern Australia except Tasmania. During the winter they migrate north into northern Australia, New Guinea and some of the southern islands of Indonesia. Their habitat includes open woodlands, beaches, dunes, cliffs, mangroves, woodlands and they often visit parks and private gardens. Like all bee-eaters, they are very social birds. When they are not breeding they roost together in large groups in dense undergrowth or large trees and are ground nesting birds. The female digs a burrow by balancing on its wings and feet, and digs with its bill. They mostly eat flying insects, but, as their name implies, they have a real taste for bees.
