Now you can now Helen Ansell’s Red Tailed Cockatoo as a 100% cotton tea towel!
This is a large cockatoo native to Australia. It is more common in the drier parts of the continent. Five subspecies are recognised, differing most significantly in beak size. Adult males have a characteristic pair of bright red pants on the tail that gives the species its name. In the more northerly parts of the country, these cockatoos are commonly seen in large flocks. These birds are usually found in eucalyptus woodlands, or along water courses. They are cavity nesters, and as such depend on trees with fairly large diameters, generally eucalyptus.
The mainstay of their diet is also eucalyptus seeds, with a specific relationship having been formed between this species and larger-fruited species of those trees in different regions. They also eat a wide variety of native and introduced grains. Like all cockatoos they can have a long life, with one being know to have lived for over 50 years.
