This bird occurs throughout much of arid and semiarid northern and central Australia, living in stony habitats on rocky hills and mountainous terrain, gorges, dry rocky creek beds and nearby gibber plains; usually within a few kilometres of permanent water. It has gained its common name because this habitat often contains spinifex grasses. There is substantial geographical variation in colour of the plumage on the belly, and hence a number of subspecies. It is also a part of the broader group of bronzewing pigeons. It is a small compact pigeon, and although males are slightly larger than females, it is generally difficult to tell them apart visually. It occasionally engages in a bowing display, with tail erect as a fan. This is not always directed at other individuals and may be simply self-assertive. They forage on the ground singly, in pairs of small flocks for seed, vegetable matter and insects, but have occasionally been seen in hundreds.
