Description
“These are the most exquisite colourful little birds, they simply had to be painted. They are so tiny you don’t often get to see their full colours unless they are sitting still for a photograph!” Helen Ansell
Gouldian Finches are Australia’s most spectacularly coloured grass-finches, and are perhaps the most spectacularly coloured of all Australian birds. They are small, about 125-140 mm long. This is the only grass-finch that nests exclusively in tree hollows or holes in termite mounds. They are found mainly in the Kimberley, but also in Arnhem Land and in small pockets around the Gulf of Carpentaria. Their natural population has declined through a loss of habitat, diseases and viral infections while their colouring makes them susceptible to predators; but their primary threat is fire. However, because of being so colourful, viable breeding populations are held in many countries.
