This particular scene is at Hutt Lagoon Port Gregory in Western Australia’s Mid West. The lagoon is formed as the Hut River is blocked by sand hills before entering the Indian Ocean and has become saline because of its proximity to the salty sea water. The pink hue results from the presence of carotenoid-producing algae Dunaliella salina, a source of β-carotene, a food-colouring agent and source of vitamin A. Few organisms can survive like D. salina does in very saline conditions that exist where evaporation levels are high.
