Description
Save Our Jarrah Forests is an original artwork by Helen Ansell, created to raise awareness and support the protection of Western Australia’s Jarrah Forest and the extraordinary wildlife that depends on it.
The Jarrah Forest forms part of one of the world’s great biodiversity hotspots. These ancient forests support an extraordinary diversity of native plants, birds, mammals, reptiles, insects and fungi, many of which depend on mature trees, natural hollows, fallen timber and the complex habitats that have developed over generations.
Helen has brought together more than 40 different species in this intricately detailed painting. Among the wildlife are the noombat (numbat), karak (forest red-tailed black cockatoo), wawding (western ringtail possum), chuditch (western quoll), nyingarn (echidna), Carnaby’s cockatoo, kingfishers, wrens, frogs, reptiles and many smaller forest inhabitants.
These creatures are surrounded by the plants and fungi that make the Jarrah Forest such a remarkable ecosystem, including balga (grass trees), djara (jarrah trees), kangaroo paws, banksias, spider orchids, wattles and native fungi.
From Helen
I created Save Our Jarrah Forests because I wanted to contribute to the protection of these extraordinary forests in the way I know best, through my art.
There are more than 40 different plants and animals represented in this painting, yet they are only a tiny glimpse of the life that exists within these forests.
I’ve included some of the familiar wildlife, but also many smaller creatures that people might not immediately notice. I hope people take the time to look closely, discover the different species hidden throughout the painting and think about the habitats they need to survive.
These forests have taken hundreds of years to develop, and once mature forest habitat is lost, it cannot simply be replaced. Protecting the Jarrah Forest means protecting the remarkable diversity of life that depends on it.
Art Supporting Conservation
25% of the proceeds from every Save Our Jarrah Forests A3 fine art paper print will go to LEAP (Locals for Environmental Action and Protection).
LEAP works at a community level to protect the environment and raise awareness about the impacts of bauxite mining on Western Australia’s Jarrah Forest and surrounding communities.
Funds raised will help support LEAP’s ongoing conservation and environmental protection work.
