Description
Save Our Jarrah Forests is an original acrylic painting by Helen Ansell, created to raise awareness of the importance of protecting Western Australia’s Jarrah Forest and the extraordinary wildlife that depends on it.
The painting brings together more than 40 species of native animals, birds, plants and flowers, capturing the remarkable biodiversity of these ancient forests.
Among the wildlife featured are the noombat (numbat), karak (forest red-tailed black cockatoo) and wawding (western ringtail possum), alongside colourful birds, reptiles, insects and smaller forest inhabitants. They are surrounded by jarrah trees, balga (grass trees), banksias, native flowers and the intricate vegetation of the forest floor.
The Story Behind the Painting
Helen created Save Our Jarrah Forests to support efforts to protect these irreplaceable habitats from the impacts of land clearing and bauxite mining.
The Jarrah Forest is part of one of the world’s great biodiversity hotspots, providing essential shelter, nesting sites and food for an extraordinary range of species.
Through this painting, Helen hopes to encourage people to look more closely at the wildlife living within these forests and recognise the importance of protecting the habitats they depend upon.
The original painting was created in support of LEAP (Locals for Environmental Action and Protection), a community environmental group working to protect the Jarrah Forest and surrounding communities.
