Wildflower Walk is inspired by the wildflower-season tradition Helen shared with her father, Don, during their years living in Mullewa.
During the busiest months at the gallery, Helen would have one day off each week. She and Don would use that day to head out into the surrounding countryside, walking amongst the wildflowers before stopping for a picnic together with Don’s homemade picnic set. It continued a connection with the landscape that had begun decades earlier at Ululla, where father and daughter explored the country together while collecting native seeds.
Wildflower Walk draws directly on those days together and the extraordinary wildflowers that bring people to Mullewa each year. Helen has also included an echidna amongst the flowers, bringing one of Australia’s most recognisable native animals into the landscape.
Created for Helen’s 2026 exhibition, A Walk in the Wildflowers – A Homage to My Father and the Country We Love, this painting gives the exhibition its central theme: a tradition of walking through the wildflowers together that ran through Helen and Don’s lives from Ululla to Mullewa.
