When the rain came to Ululla

Some of Helen’s strongest childhood memories are of the extraordinary transformation of the country after rain.

At Ululla Station, long stretches of dry weather could be interrupted by rain and the landscape would respond almost immediately. Hundreds of tiny frogs emerged from beneath the sand, goannas appeared to feed and fresh tracks crossed the newly wet ground.

The plants changed too. Bush tomatoes, grasses and seasonal wildflowers appeared across country that only days earlier had seemed dry and sparse.

After the Rains brings those memories together. Rather than showing the arid landscape as still or empty, Helen has painted the brief explosion of movement, colour and life that follows water.

A landscape suddenly alive

Frogs and goannas

After rain, hundreds of tiny frogs could emerge from beneath the sand. Their sudden appearance drew goannas across the country to feed, bringing movement back into a landscape that had seemed almost still.

Tracks across the wet ground

Fresh tracks appeared everywhere as animals moved through the softened earth. Helen has brought those marks into the painting as part of the story of what happens when water returns to dry country.

Bush tomatoes, grasses and wildflowers

The vegetation responded just as quickly. Bush tomatoes, grasses and seasonal wildflowers emerged across the landscape, transforming the colours and texture of the country after rain.

A painting shaped by memory

The landscape in After the Rains comes from a place Helen knew intimately. Growing up at Ululla meant seeing firsthand how dramatically the country could change with water.

Those early memories became part of the visual language Helen carried into her work: the animals, flowers, grasses, tracks and small signs of life that are easy to miss unless you know to look for them.

The painting was created for Helen’s 2026 exhibition A Walk in the Wildflowers – A Homage to My Father and the Country We Love, a body of work shaped by childhood, country and the years Helen later spent exploring wildflowers with her father, Don Miller.
