Desert Seeds reaches back to the years Helen spent collecting native seed alongside her father, Don, at Ululla. Together they moved through the country watching closely as plants flowered, changed and finally set seed.
The seed bins shown here were part of that work and carry a very real connection to the story behind the painting. They represent hours spent collecting, sorting and learning directly from the landscape.
Those experiences became part of the inspiration for A Walk in the Wildflowers, Helen’s 2026 exhibition and homage to her father and the country they loved.
In Desert Seeds, the small forms that are so easy to pass by in the bush are enlarged and given space of their own. Seeds, native plants and the colours of the Midwest become the subject rather than the background.

Inside Desert Seeds
The seeds of
the landscape
Desert Seeds turns Helen’s memories of collecting native seed into a study of the extraordinary forms found across the Western Australian bush.
The painting draws on the years Helen spent travelling across Ululla with her father, Don, collecting native seed for revegetation projects and learning to look closely at the plants growing across the station.
Wattle species, native grasses and wildflowers all form part of that story. Their pods, seed heads and flowering structures take on remarkably different shapes as they move through their life cycles, from the long pods associated with Acacia species to the distinctive flower heads of Mulla Mulla.
Rather than treating seeds as something hidden or insignificant, Desert Seeds brings them forward. Helen enlarges and rearranges these botanical forms across the canvas, allowing the pods, stems, foliage and flower heads to become the subject of the work.
The result reflects something she learnt while collecting alongside her father: the closer you look at the bush, the more diversity there is to see.
