Bush Gems brings together some of the small, remarkable treasures Helen remembers from the country around Ululla Station and from a childhood spent exploring the bush with her father, Don.
The painting features honey ants, emu eggs, cogla (Marsdenia australis), mulla mulla, everlasting daisies and wattles — a collection of plants, animals and discoveries that reflect the extraordinary diversity of the landscape.
Growing up at Ululla meant learning to look closely. Helen spent her childhood walking the country, travelling for hours in the back of the ute and collecting native seeds with her dad. Don developed an extensive knowledge of Western Australian flora through his years as a native seed collector, and that shared fascination with the plants and details of the bush became an important influence on Helen’s work.
Created for Helen’s 2026 exhibition, A Walk in the Wildflowers – A Homage to My Father and the Country We Love, Bush Gems reflects the beauty found not only in sweeping landscapes, but in the individual flowers, seeds, creatures and unexpected treasures discovered within them.
