Chequered Swallowtail was inspired by an unexpected sight Helen encountered while packing up her father Don’s home after his passing. Among the familiar monarch butterflies, Helen began noticing striking yellow-and-black butterflies around the property, which became the starting point for this painting.
Helen brought the butterfly together with flowers from Don’s own garden, including pigface and Geraldton wax, creating a work drawn directly from what was growing and appearing around his home at that time.
Chequered Swallowtail is an original painting from Helen Ansell’s 2026 exhibition, A Walk in the Wildflowers – A Homage to My Father and the Country We Love, a collection inspired by her father and the memories, landscapes, flora and fauna they shared over a lifetime.
