Original painting by Helen Ansell
Wildflower Walk
A painting filled with memories of wildflower season in Mullewa.
Wildflower Walk grew from a tradition Helen shared with her father, Don.
During the busiest months of wildflower season, Helen usually had one day away from the gallery each week. She and Dad would head out into the country, see what was flowering, walk amongst the wildflowers and eventually find somewhere to stop for a picnic with his homemade picnic set.
They had been exploring the bush together for years before that, right back to their time at Ululla collecting native seeds. Those days around Mullewa became another chapter in something they had always shared.

At the heart of the exhibition
A landscape full of life
Helen created Wildflower Walk for her 2026 exhibition, A Walk in the Wildflowers: A Homage to My Father and the Country We Love.
The painting became an important part of the exhibition because it brings together so much of the country that shaped Helen’s life with Dad.
The wildflowers fill almost every part of the landscape, while the echidna sits right amongst them. It gives the work the feeling of stumbling across a little piece of bush that is completely alive around you.
It is a joyful painting, but underneath all that colour is a very personal story about place, family and the country Helen continues to paint.
